Paul Tavano was diagnosed with ALS in August of 2009 after experiencing weakness in his hands and muscle spasms. In the midst of this news, Paul and his wife Kathy did not lose hope and instead took action. “I am convinced that there has to be a reason God chose me to deal with this disease. I believe the reason is to raise awareness of and ultimately help find a cure for ALS,” Paul shared.
The Drive to CURE ALS
As the Tavano family embarked on their new ALS journey, their friends looked for ways to get involved in the fight against ALS. Paul saw this as an opportunity to channel their passion and shortly after, Tee Up to CURE ALS was born.
“We got together with a few of our close friends, and we were all golfers and had been to different charity events and felt that we could put on an event and raise funds that we would earmark for research. I was very adamant that I didn’t want it to be for me, and that I wanted it to be towards research.” Like many others, their hope is to one day live in a world without this terrible disease.
Paul and Kathy are unyielding in their fight against this disease. During last year’s challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, they adapted to a virtual tournament to keep the fight moving. In the last twelve years, CURE ALS has raised over $860K for critical ALS research. Every dollar brings us one step closer to a world without ALS. “ALS isn’t going to stop, so neither are we.”
It’s Time to Tee Up to CURE ALS
In 2021, Paul and Kathy are excited to gather in-person for the 12th Annual Tee Up to CURE ALS tournament. This year’s tournament is dedicated to the memory of ALS Hero Mike Hubner. All proceeds from this event will benefit critical research for a cure for ALS.
“The hope is that the research that is going on will show and develop treatment and help extend the life of those who have the disease. It may or may not help me, but it will help someone down the line. I hope that somehow, someway we have been able to make a difference, and hopefully, we will be able to see that difference,” said Paul.
