Golf, sports, and fighting ALS. The 4th Annual Under Ballou Skies Golf Classic is a unique combination of these three things. This year’s event raised $70,000 for ALS research and patient care programs, with more than 130 golfers participating.
This one-of-a-kind event incorporates several sports-themed contests throughout a round of golf at the Twin Creeks Country Club in Cedar Park, Texas. Golfers shot hoops with Hoops Austin, pitched with the Round Rock Express, and played a little golf pong.
A staple of the tournament each year is Bob Ballou’s Ice Bucket Challenge at hole nine. CBS Austin Sports Director and ALS Texas Board Member, Bob founded the tournament in 2014 in an effort to combine his love of golf and sports with his passion for ALS. Each year, he takes donations and buckets of ice water at hole nine.
This year’s tournament honored Tom and Lara Gary. Tom was diagnosed with ALS in 2016. He served in the Air Force in the Gulf War, and he and his wife have six children. They have been active ALS advocates, using his blog Tom’s Troops to raise awareness and money, as well as to call their followers to take action in public policy decisions.
Money raised at the golf classic fund local care, to support patients who need help now, advocacy, to ensure public policy serves the needs of ALS patients, and research, so that one day nobody will suffer from ALS again.
Congratulations to tournament winners Brian Blumentrath, Adam Gafken, Scott Vidrine, and Justin Hill.
A special thank you to our presenting Sponsor Cobb Mechanical, as well as VOX Integrations, LIfeLast, Waterloo Plastering, Prime Lending, Papasan Properties, and CBS Austin.
